To really understand the Whiskey Rebellion, we can't trivialize it to a single tax.  It grew out of longstanding tensions between the West and East, between the frontier and the more-developed regions.  The Whiskey Rebellion wasn't the first time these tensions had come up, or even the first time they'd given rise to actual violence.
