It’s significant that Heinlein wasn’t just playing with ideas. After The Bomb was a known threat he published polemics at his own expense advocating the end of large cities and the relocation of our population as nearly uniformly as could be managed.

I remember that essay of his that got reprinted in "Expanded Universe" - it was wild! It wouldn't have been a good thing at all, but a very useful thought experiment... and parts of it still are when people suggest coercive urban planning.
