Eric Flint and Dave Freer (mostly the latter) wrote some sequels to the Witches of Karres book. They very much keep to the spirit of the original but have slightly more plot

Thanks; I haven't read them, but I've heard of them.

You read Caught in Crystal? I didn't think anyone else knew that book! Can't quibble with the review, there were other things I thought she did very well but they're all spoilers.

Have you read The Raven Ring? Same setting, same period of her career, somewhat different context, but I thought it was a lot of fun.

(At the other end of her career, I just finished Dark Lord's Daughter. Clearly setting up what I'm gonna guess is a trilogy - series of some sort, anyway - but I thought it was solid as far as it went.)

Yes, I agree, Wrede did other things in the book well too - like to pick one example, how she gradually drops more and more clues about the bad things that're happening with the Order.

I've read "The Raven Ring," a long time ago back in college. I don't remember much; I think I liked it but not as much as "Caught in Crystal"?

I also liked the arc of... ah, I forget his name, and I can't find my copy. The wizard who was with the original group and was a friend of her husband's. And the way that one scene changed between memory and reality - it was interesting how she spun out both versions of how a thing could happen while keeping both (though I thought more the real one) essentially true to the nature of the characters. While having developed them enough through flashbacks that you could even tell if it was.

Or anyway, that was my impression when I read it; it was a long time ago.

Yes, the flashbacks, and the divergences between memory and reality there, were really well handled! And the characters were well-done too.
